Through various media we are told that we need to take care of the earth, we need to live greener lives and many people have taken up this call of becoming better caretakers. Therefore, if you have taken up this call, you will be helping the environment by using less water at home. Added to this, you will be saving money on a monthly basic.
How is the environment helped? Well, less energy, heat, coal, oil and gas, just to mention a few will be used in the purification and transportation of this valuable liquid into our homes, work, schools etc.

Several ways that you can help to reduce your water consumption are:
Storage
For some of us, when we need a glass of cold water we turn on the tap and allow the water to flow into the sink until it is coming through cold enough for us to drink. We are wasting it this way. Therefore, by filling a jug or bottle and placing it in the refrigerator will get the job done because, whenever you need something cold, it will be there.
Defrosting
Do not defrost meat or any other food under running water. Instead, several hours before preparing it take it out of the freezer and place it in the fridge or an empty sink. However, if you prefer to use liquid in the defrosting process, full a bowl and put the food in, instead of a sink full of water.
Right Load
When washing clothes and dishes do use more water than is necessary. That is, if you are washing half a load of clothes in a washing machine, do not use a full tub, set the machine to stop when the water is in the middle, or only wash when you have a full load.
As for the dishes, if you are using a dishwasher, wash only when you have a full load. On the other hand, if you are doing it by hand, full the sink to an appropriate level and add washing liquid, instead of turning on the pipe every time you are about to wash a dish.
Leaking Faucets
If there are any leaking faucets in your home, although only small drops may be escaping, it is best to get them fix because at the end of the month a few gallons of water would have escaped.
No Trash Bin
Do not use the toilet as a trash bin. By this I mean, instead of dropping a tissue that you used due to a cold, or tissue that the children left lying on the floor, into the toilet and flushing it, drop it in the waste basket.
Shorter Showers
Shorter showers are also a good way to save water.
When Tidying
When shaving and, or brushing your teeth, turn off the faucet, instead of allowing it to flow as you tidy up.
